Wavescape Art Surfboard Auction 2011

We did our board with Isiqalo (means ‘the first step’ in Xhosa) which is an amazing Youth Surfing Development Program where the kids learn to surf and play games which provide surfing metaphors for  HIV, Sex Ed and Community Awareness. The theme of our board was ‘Freedom of Expression’ so the studio got the kids to write all over the board and freely express themselves after they did a workshop on what the Constitution says about Freedom of Expression and what that actually means for them.

Then the artists finished off the board designing two characters, which were actually the kids expressing themselves with different hand gestures made up by the kids during our workshop – Top side by Sergio and Fin side by Claire – each continuing the theme and expressing themselves. Claire’s side is about Water:which is quite an important topic seeing its Water that allows us to be alive….. so its important to start building more sustainable water systems and being more Water conscious. Sergio was inspired by surfing at Muizenberg, the view from the back line, graffiti, the kids and the messages they wrote during the workshop. He left all the original writings of the kids as the fill of his character.

On World Aids Day we presented the finished board to the surfer kids in Masi along with Desmond Tutu who thought the board was ‘wonderful!’ and listened while we explained our project ideas to him.

Buy this board and help to invest in some awesome projects which are already making a huge difference and with more financial help can quickly activate some original and inspiring ideas. Maybe a whole lot of you could club together and buy it for more?

We are Creative Cape Town so lets be brave and make some cool stuff happen.
